We say, because the Bible says, that we are the "chosen" people of God.  What does this mean?  It means that it's only God's undeserved and sacrificial love that makes us His.  It means that we are different, "holy" to God in Christ's righteousness and striving to keep His commands.  It means that we are His eternal precious treasure, so treasured that He would even give up His beloved Son for us!
