Rock of Reconciliation

Jesus beautifully illustrates in his parable of the Prodigal Son the reconciliation that Saint Paul teaches about in 2 Corinthians. The prodigal son carries with him all of the stench of rebellion, failure, and death itself. Yet the Father eagerly awaits and then celebrates his return. God reconciles us through Christ, and he grants to us this ministry of reconciliation.

o Law: Both the younger and the older sons demonstrate our sinful nature. One openly rebels and walks away. The other presumes his entitlement, yet acts not like a son, but like a slave.

o Gospel: “He made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

o Application: Jesus reconciles us to the Father. He is not out to make slaves or servants of us, but sons and daughters. What does it look like to be a son or daughter in God’s forever family? What does it look like to join Jesus in his ministry of reconciliation?
