Looking out for Number One? - Traditional Service

Pastor: John Scheusner Series: Unorthodox Wisdom

Voluntary self-sacrifice is wise; self-service is folly.

Acts 12 is Peter’s miraculous deliverance from prison. 2 Timothy is a snapshot of Paul at the end of his life. We need these two glimpses to understand what Jesus is getting at when he says, “Do you love me? Feed my lambs.” It’s orthodox human thinking to secure yourself before others. God’s self-sacrificial love invites us join him in an unconventional life of voluntary self-sacrifice.

  • Scriptures:
  • Acts 12:1-11 – An angel miraculously sets Peter free from prison. He notes that the Lord has rescued him from Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting by his arrest.
  • 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 17-18 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
  • John 21:15-19Jesus reinstates Peter, saying, “Do you love me? …Feed my sheep.”
