The Beginning of Wisdom - Traditional Service

Pastor: John Scheusner Series: The Fear of the Lord

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Big Idea: This week we will dig into the concept described in the summary of our theme, found in Psalm 111:10: What does it mean to fear the Lord? And what is wisdom, as used by the psalmist? The second half of this theme verse sheds light on the first: “All who follow his precepts have good understanding.” When we follow the precepts – or teachings – of the Lord, what do we find at the center? In the words of Psalm 111, righteousness, grace, and compassion. Food for those who fear him (Think “I am the bread of life.”); redemption for his people. Sorrow over sin turns toward faith in the Redeemer.

Scriptures:

o Psalm 11:1-10 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

o 2 Timothy 2:1-13 – “The things you have heard me say… entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.”

o Luke 17:11-19 – “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

Prayer of the Day: Almighty God, You show mercy to Your people in all their troubles. Grant us always to recognize Your goodness, give thanks for Your compassion, and praise Your holy name; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
