Christ and Him Crucified (Contemporary Service)

Pastor: John Scheusner Series: Foolishness of the Cross

At the center of our faith is not a grand or lofty philosophy, but Christ crucified.

o Law: The antithesis of the Kingdom of God and the good news of the Gospel, according to St. Paul’s writing here, is lofty speech and [worldly] wisdom, strength and confidence, the wisdom of men, and the spirit of this world.

o Gospel: The Gospel / Kingdom of God is expressed paradoxically through humility and “foolishness;” through weakness, fear, and trembling; through the power and wisdom of God [contra men]; and a secret and hidden Truth, revealed only by the Holy Spirit.

o Application: We must receive the Holy Spirit in order to perceive and comprehend the things of God. At the heart of this Gospel is Christ crucified [and raised from the dead].

 Scriptures:

o Psalm 112:1-9 – “Light dawns in the darkness for the upright…”

o 1 Corinthians 2:1-12 – “I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.”

o Matthew 5:13-20 – “You are the light of the world.”
