If we ask this question today, “have you ever seen the Savior?” Most likely all of us would say, “no, not with my own eyes.” And yet, we are still here at church on Easter morning celebrating His resurrection from the dead. Why? Especially when most of us rely on sight as our primary sense to navigate the world and our beliefs. It is because we are not here based on our own sight, but because of faith given to us by Holy Spirit. It is through God Himself that you and I now see the risen Savior.
Law: You and I are blind. We are blind to our sin and blind to our Savior. And without proper sight, we often see things that are “delights to the eyes,” that actually bring death. We cannot rely on our sight.
Gospel: We now see, because the Holy Spirt has imparted faith and Jesus reveals Himself just as He revealed Himself to Mary in the garden. We see His sacrifice for our sins and His resurrection for our eternal hope.
Application: We cling to the promises of Jesus while we tell others about our hope. That, through faith, we see our Savior Jesus. We see Him in the Sacraments. We see Him in His fulfilled promises. And we see Him through the testimony of Mary and the Apostles.
Scriptures:
o Genesis 3:1-10 – So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate…
o Colossians 3:1-4 – For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
o John 20:1-18 – Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord.”
