Don’t Be Messin’ With My Bread (Traditional Service)

Pastor: John Scheusner Series: A Sense of the Savior

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus opens the Scriptures up to two disciples and how everything points to Him. And yet, even with the Scriptures pointing to Jesus, the disciples do not know that it is Him. It is not until they share a meal and Christ breaks bread that He is revealed to them. He was known to them in the breaking of bread. Through sharing a meal. And it is through the breaking of Bread, through sharing a meal that Jesus is also revealed to us today! As we eat His flesh and drink His blood in communion, we are connected as close as we can be on this side of eternity with our Savior. Through tasting the Bread and smelling the aroma (and drinking) of the Wine, Jesus is made known to us.

Law: Do you and I mess around with Jesus’ Bread (Body)? Do we receive it on Sunday only to intentionally sin on Monday? We continually cheat on our Savior who has given Himself to us.

Gospel: You and I are given and able to “taste and see that the Lord is good,” through His very Body and Blood. And it is by receiving it that we are given life, salvation, and the forgiveness of sins.

Application: We are to receive the Bread and Wine, to taste Jesus, for the forgiveness of sins and for the strength to keep us eternally in His grace. But as we let grace abound, we are also called to not “go on sinning so that grace may abound.” But instead, in our forgiveness and freedom we are called to live according to God’s Law and to serve our neighbor.

Scriptures:

o Psalm 34:1-8 – Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

o Luke 24:13-38 – He was known to them in the breaking of bread.
