Fed by Christ – We receive the Holy Spirit!
Big Idea: Just as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit is poured out upon all believers! The Church is born!
o Law: There are two calls for repentance here. One is in the example of those who suggest the Apostles are drunk, making fun of the work of the Spirit. Let us not make light of the power of the Holy Spirit, even when we don’t understand what He is doing. Another call for repentance occurs at the end of Peter’s sermon, later in the Acts account. It says that the people are cut to the heart, and they ask, “What shall we do?” Peter exhorts them, “Repent and be baptized…”
o Application: The Holy Spirit opens our ears to the Word of God and intercedes for us when we pray.5 We receive the gift of Holy Scripture and access to the Father in prayer when we are baptized.
o Gospel: We are invited to come to Jesus, who gives us living water by sending the Holy Spirit. How do we receive the Holy Spirit? Having been called to repentance and washed in the waters of baptism, our sins are forgiven and we receive the Holy Spirit! Every day, we walk in the way of Jesus confident that we are forgiven and filled with the Spirit.
Scriptures:
o Psalm 25:1-15 – “Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.”
o Acts 2:1-21 – Quoting the prophet Joel, Peter preachers, “And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh…”
o John 7:37-39 – “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
