LOOK OUT –Filled with the Spirit, We Love Others (Contemporary Service)

Looking toward our neighbors, we live out our faith in the community in which we live, work, learn, and play. We are known as Jesus’ followers by our love (John 13:34-35). The Holy Spirit, given to us at baptism, sustains us in the love of Christ and empowers us in witness for Christ.

o Law: There are two ways we can miss the mark in today’s topic: We can miss the work of the Holy Spirit entirely, or we can lose our first love (Rev. 2:4-5) and quench the work of the Spirit.

o Application: The Holy Spirit anoints us to do the work of Jesus. He gives witness to Christ through our love, expressed in word and deed to a community and a world in need.

o Gospel: The same Holy Spirit that brings salvation through Christ is now given to us!

Scriptures:

o Isaiah 61:1-4 – The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.

o Acts 11:1-18 – Peter recognizes the mission of Jesus when the Holy Spirit falls upon the Gentiles.

o John 14:15-26 – The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in Jesus’ name, he will teach us all things.
