John knew all the promises God had spoken to the Israelites about the coming of the King. John followed that and proclaimed with boldness about the coming King, but here we see John begin wondering if he has staked his life on the wrong promise. John the Baptist is still missing God speaking through Jesus in fulfilled prophecy, because he’s still looking for his own idea of the Messiah. In anguish he asks: “Are you the one who is to come or are we to wait for another.?” In other words: “Lord, I’ve staked my entire life on you. Has it all been for nothing?”
