The work of the Holy Spirit is to tear apart the barriers between humanity and God. Today we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, hearing in our gospel lesson of heavens torn open to unleash the Spirit of God into a world filled with pain. Our baptism— not just a one-time washing with water, but a daily dying and rising— is where we find the Spirit at work today, tearing through our illusions and directing us to new and lasting life.
