Even John the Baptizer’s expectations of the Messiah were misplaced. What was he looking for? Probably someone who would fulfill the words of John’s own prophecy: “His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” (Luke 3:17) Instead, Jesus is healing people and setting them free.
