Repent! Bearing Fruit

March 20, 2022 Pastor: John Scheusner Series: Reset - Perspectives on Repentance

Passage: Ezekiel 33:7–20, 1 Corinthians 10:1–13, Luke 13:1–9

Jesus responds to the notion that peoples’ misfortunes in this life are categorically tied to Divine judgment for their sin. To this belief, Jesus says “no.” But that does not mean that everyone need not be concerned over their sin. To the contrary, ALL people need to repent! Apart from repentance, all will perish. But God is not out to get us; he desires that we repent. In Ezekiel, God says “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live.” In 1 Corinthians, we are reminded that in the midst of temptation that all humankind faces, “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength.” In Luke, the parable of the fig tree reminds us of God’s patience, as he holds back his hand of judgment and instead nurtures us in hopes that we will come back to life and bear good fruit. Finally, Christ the rock (per 1 Cor. 10:4) still follows us, that we may drink of Him for the forgiveness of sins.
